Ausie trio Sneaky Sound System has certainly enjoyed their success at the top of Australian pop charts, claiming responsibility for the longest chart run in Australia’s history with the hit single “I Love It.” Now, they release the whole plate of goodies to the world with their self titled LP Sneaky Sound System.
Sneaky Sound System prides themselves in their connection with the atmosphere of the club, everything from the fog machine behind the DJ booth to the empty bottle of Jameson at the bar. The aim of this record is dancability and they certainly accomplish their feat with beats embedded in the ever growing dance revolution taking place worldwide. The lyrics are a blend of throwback disco and modern day sing-song, extremely simplistic in delivery but dangerously infectious to the highly intoxicated.
Tracks like “UFO” help build momentum into the record and are guaranteed to shut the club down with catchy lyrics and wailing synths. “When We Were Young” is a track full of teen angst that showcases the group’s ability to produce a track that’s not all about the club. Unfortunately however, Sneaky Sound System falls into the pitfalls that so many other artists trying to break into the growing dance movement do, they produce an album full of repetitive pop beats and with little to no lyrical variation save a couple of songs. Put these Ausie imports back in the cupboard to spoil with the rest of the disco carbon copies.
