Mika Miko
We Be Xuxa
Set to embark on a UK tour in May with the Black Lips and Gringo Star, Mika Miko should fit in perfectly with the energy and debauched antics of the two other acts. Their newest album We Be Xuxa is an energetic and chaotic punk frenzy, harkening to the Black Lips’ previous album 200 Million Thousand. However this punk madness eventually forces listeners into a distorted stupor. At just over 22 minutes in length, each track eventually loses its identity among the repetitive, overdriven, four-bar guitar riffs and scratchy, lo-fi vocal tracks. Yes, I realize that is what punk “is”, but adhering to the punk genre does not mean sacrificing creativity or originality (two aspects most of We Be Xuxa“s tracks ignore). In fact, no track in particular sticks out, given that I cannot mentally differentiate between the melodies of track X and track Y. Even though We Be Xuxa may leave a lot to be desired, Mika Miko’s concert reviews have been raving. If they can capture the same raw energy of their music in their live shows, then these reviews must be spot on. No one can deny the Los Angeles group’s enthusiasm. However as for Mika Miko’s album, their creativity seems numbed by monotonous repetition.
