What is De La Soul’s driving force for creating innovative music? For 20 + years De La Soul has been influential to Hip-Hop; how has the state of Hip-Hop influenced your music today?
Our love for music and love for keeping our lights on!!!! Not too much influence from today’s music but there’s some good stuff out there, though
What do you believe, if anything, is the single most important factor creating a difference between “commercial” Hip-Hop and “underground” Hip-Hop?
Most important factor is you, because if you times a million like it, [then it] is now commercial.
Who in your opinion has had the most profound impact of all-time on Hip-Hop culture?
Kool Herc. If he didn’t birth it, we couldn’t have raised it and elevated it
What have you guys done to keep the group together after all these years?
Give each other space and respect each other and fight it out a few times on a room!

As veterans of Hip-Hop’s more Afro-centric, positive, conscious, intelligent rap, what do you think is the best way we can end the pathetic, brainless, hyper-individualistic, materialistic rap trend? Why should I even care about Hip-Hop anymore?
The best way to end it is to concentrate on building up and encouraging and buying and supporting the Rap you do love. It’s out there…look for it. When you stop caring for something, that means you stop nurturing it and it dies
Are you still cool with Afrika Baby Bam? When is the next album?
I love Afrika and respect our good times together. That is all that matters for me. When is their next album [coming out]? I don’t know, but I’ll call Mike G and tell ‘em to tell ya
When are De La gonna be coming on tour the UK again & not just in London? When is the new AOI album gonna get released?
New AOI album ain’t happening and we are back in London performing all over, 1st week of June
What are your thoughts on whether or not a Native Tongues album will ever be completed?
Native Tongues album probably won’t happen, but collabs between us will. I’m rhyming on a joint with Mike G, and me and Dave is getting on something with Dres and so on, so the love is there
Is there anyone that you haven’t collabed with yet, that ya’ll would like to? When’s AOI:3 coming out — on some DJ ssshhh…?
I would love to work with Dave from De La soul.. Oh yeah, I did that already, so I’m good then!! No AOI album, cuz if it ain’t here yet, it ain’t coming. No need to turn this into our “detox” album, but other albums from us [are] soon [to] come
