ACEYALONE and RJD2: So Hip-Hopular

nterview with the Lonely One (By Chris Nunan)

I recently watched the documentary This is the Life which documents the history of the now famous Good Life Café where you began showcasing your skill. How far have you come as an artist since the days of the Good Life?
Aceyalone: As an artist I’m just barely starting to reach those points where I know that my artistic insight is on point. I said it a long time ago in “Guidelines” my attempt is to redefine your hip-hop guideline. Part of me naturally goes against the grain and the other part is that I want to do things that nobody else has done. I want to set precedence for I’m doing and I think I’m accomplishing that. I’m interested in taking my art to the farthest place it can go. Until I’m done I’m gonna keep continuing to do that.

Where is the next step on taking your art to the farthest place it can go?
Aceyalone: There are things I want to do. I wanna do a completely jazz record; more on the levels vocally like a Hendrix, Eddie Jefferson type of thing. But, I think that every couple seasons I don’t want to do too many of these records because people begin thinking that I can’t rhyme. And I can rhyme! So I think my next record I want to be as raw as raw can get on some hip-hop shit.

What is your take on today’s hip-hop artists?
Aceyalone: THEY SUCK! And they’re not coming fresh. I want to ask you a question. Why did you enjoy the album?

Because it fused my favorite types of music. As a kid my mom was in to the Motown sound and Earth Wind and Fire and then my father was in to Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, and such. So when I would listen to music around the house or in the car; I was always hearing that because in my parents eyes I was too young to listen to rap music. Instead, I would go into my room and put my head phones on and listen to rap music, but I still enjoyed the music my parents listened to and always looking for a sound that fused the music that I listened too with the music that my parent’s listened to. This album did that for me exactly how I imagined it in my head.
