Eagle Nebula – Cosmic Headphones (Review)

Cosmic Headphones

The Eagle Nebula is a star cluster 7000 light-years from Earth. The exotic images the Hubble Space Telescope produced of this constellation show the billowy gas and dust formations that through extraordinary cosmic phenomenon will become stars.

In a sense, artist Eagle Nebula’s debut release Cosmic Headphones acts as a beautifully creative soundtrack to these images. Eagle’s enlightening lyrics combined with her Parliament-tinged funk-hop grooves create an otherworldly sound that perfectly complements the otherworldly images. Her words are spoken with a sassy disposition, the way she accentuates certain phrases keeps her delivery fresh. ‘When you’re listening to the hardcore funk – it’s almost as though the song goes inside of your body and makes your back start to move – it makes you want to dance,’ Eagle expresses in her interlude ‘Fonktion 101′. However, moving your body to her beats does not come naturally. It takes a moment of uncomfortably intense limbo to get your body synchronized to the beat, partly because each beat is so abstractly styled its almost difficult to immediately immerse yourself in her music. That being said, her originality is undeniable, and her sometimes smooth, sometimes irregular delivery keeps each track unique. ‘I travel all around in my Spaceship Earth,’ Eagle spits on ‘Spaceship Earth,’ from Los Angeles to New York, and to the far reaches of the universe. Cosmic Headphones is eclectic blend of funk, hip-hop and atmospheric groove, an interstellar adventure in sound and lyricism.
