Diamond Watch Wrist – Ice Capped at Both Ends

No Tags

Mix live instruments, folk, noise and ambient music and what do you get? Ice Capped at Both Ends, Diamond Watch Wrist’s newest LP. The duo, comprised of Scott Herren, also known as artist and producer Prefuse 73 and drummer, Zach Hill, apply some of music theory’s greatest formula’s to produce an album both sonically pleasing and cohesive from start to finish.
The haunting vocals accompanied by the array of instruments used throughout this record make for a listen that takes the subject deep into his or her psyche. ‘Diamonds falling off my grill’ and ‘Dot org green consumer’ showcase the pairs’ roots in the growing noise scene while ‘Simple love notes (5 years later)’ brings out the brooding nature of the musicians. The short comings of this record come in the form of its vocals. Nearly half way through the record the Gregorian chant-esque lyrics become background noise to the aurally beautiful instrumentals giving Ice Capped at Both Ends the dreaded second half slump
Despite minor flaws, Ice Capped at Both Ends is a solid listen. The records melancholy demeanor and poignant sounds make it perfect for a late night soundtrack. Near perfect execution and obvious thoughtfulness earn this record a seat atop the indie throne.
