Stephanie McKay
Tell it like it is
New York City’s native soul sister Stephanie McKay tells it like it is on her new LP conveniently titled Tell it like it is. The album roots itself in the rhythms of the 1960’s and 70’s with lyrics that are throwback to the days of the Vicki Anderson patented call and response.
Standing up to tough acts like Erykah Badu, Macy Gray and Jill Scott is a hard feat to accomplish, but Stephanie McKay certainly gives it a shot. Tracks like ‘Jackson Avenue’ flex her roots in New York City hip-hop as she roll calls her favorite rappers of the late 80’s and reminisces about her times on the ave. ‘Where did our love go’ has McKay hooking up with Anthony Hamilton on the swooning love ballad fit for those hot summer nights at home with your significant other.
Overall Tell it like it is delivers the nostalgic funkiness that we all fell in love with when the Mothership Connection landed in 1975, but it lacks the grittiness we fell in love with back in the era of bell bottom jeans, big afros and burgundy Cadillac’s. None the less, the fusion of hip-hop, R&B, classic soul and funk make this joint an instant barbeque banger, its soulful melodies are tailor made to kick off the warm weather.
