Suckers
Suckers EP
Like Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion, Brooklyn alt-pop group Suckers has exercised the same strategy for success. With airy, chanted harmonies and shimmering guitar fills, each successive track on their debut EP expands upon the echoes and ambience of the previous. The first track ‘Beach Queen’ likens most to the traditional Animal Collective sound with its thumping drum arrangement and choppy, yet flowing guitar parts. Next, ‘Afterthoughts & TV’ is a tripped-out version of a Brian Wilson daydream, with its weepy guitar slides and cheery vocals. The third track ‘Easy Chairs’ mellowly glides through an alternate state of relaxation, ultimately resulting in the anthemic, pub-style ballad, ‘It Get’s Your Body Moving.’ This epic finale rocks the hardest of the four tracks on Suckers, and caps the foursome’s versatile approach to their debut EP. When listened to from start to finish, Suckers tells a gentile, relaxing tale that is musically soothing and revitalizing. In a world where emulation is all too prevalent from artist to artist, Suckers stands out, taking a bold stance against the formulaic trash that much of modern music has become.
