Asteroids Galaxy Tour, The
Fruit
Remember when trip-hop was the big thing? Not to say that it is outdated in any way, shape or form, but as of now, there may be a band at the forefront of a new hip-hop drums/female crooner hybrid. This time around, it’s a little more psychedelic at times, but these are the seeds The Asteroids Galaxy Tour has planted with their full-length debut Fruit. Danish duo Mette Lindberg and Lars Iversen conjure up images of a tale where a little girl befriends an enormous ‘monster’ and eventually takes control of him. What the hell is that supposed to mean? Well, even though Mette’s syrupy, diabetes-inducing sugary voice (sporadically reminiscent of a young Nelly Furtado) is childlike at times, it sits well amidst trembling synths and beast-like drums (as seen on the opening track ‘Lady Jesus’).Throughout a mere ten tracks, The Asteroids Galaxy tour have enough instrumentation, unique vocals and funk sensibilities to make for a very pleasant adventure. On ‘Push The Envelope,’ it’s surprising that an ‘invincibility-into-sound converter’ isn’t in the credits as Mette beckons the listener towards her over military kick drums and triumphant horns. Fruit is able to strike that hardly graspable balance of being happy or uplifting without sounding like score for ‘The Teletubbies.’ Though a relatively new group, these two have established a sound for themselves that isn’t re-inventing the wheel: it’s pushing the wheel forwards.
