Black Milk, Nottz, Khrysis, Ta’Racch, Flying Lotus and the immortal J Dilla. The production alone is the stuff of legend. But the stage belongs to Finale on this, A Pipe Dream And A Promise, his debut album. Chronicling the plight of his troubled city’Detroit’Finale holds his own backed by heavy-hitter production. Abrasive, impassioned, and heartfelt, Finale raps over tracks like ‘The Waiting Game’ with a 50 Cent-like gutter flow only Detroit could produce. But it’s the Black Milk-helmed ‘Motor Music’ and the J Dilla-produced ‘Heat’ which stand out among the rest. And if that wasn’t enough: The album features Prince Whipper Whip from the legendary Cold Crush Brothers. Notwithstanding, the cool and serene ‘Brother’s Keeper’ and ‘Paid Homage (R.I.P. J Dilla)’ shine for their multilayered precision as well. A Pipe Dream And A Promise is a solid first effort not to be dismissed. Motor music indeed.
