Germany’s ‘minimal dance connoisseur,’ Steve Bug, is out with a compilation celebrating his ten-year career in crafting scaled-down house music for the masses. Time Flies (The Best of Steve Bug 1999-2009) not only brings in his work for Poker Flat Recordings, but tracks from his secret labels B-Series and Traffic Signs. The album covers all of Bug’s big hits, including ‘Loverboy,’ which blew up his status as a leader in what he calls ‘Da Minimal Funk.’ The digital-only release is a solid showing of the DJ’s career, and it’s definitely refreshing from the loud, in-your-face electro that’s beginning to overstay its welcome in the popular sphere: Bug’s style harkens back to a time when things were kept simple. And in most cases, as it is here, simpler is better. There isn’t anything necessarily mindblowing about this release, but it does make for a nice cohesive showing of the minimal genre done right.
