Tim Exile – Listening Tree

Overall, electronic vet Tim Exile’s Listening Tree gives a general sense of being rolled a tad bit tight. Okay, it’s rolled nut-crunchingly tight. Don’t get the wrong impression, tracks like”Bad Dust” and “Don’t Think We’re One” certainly have the self-indulgence, which is all the rage on dance-floors these days. However, with monotonous and melodramatic musings like “I’ve lost the keys to the gates of me” from the latter, it sucks the sexiness out of the self-absorbtion that makes us, us. This sluggish saga continues with the jumpy yet lazy, synths from “There’s Nothing Left of Me But Her and This” which seems to go on for ages but never actually covers new ground or even dwells in musical territory that would be enjoyable for four and a half minutes. And, essentially, this is a microcosm for the rest of the unfortunately appropriately titled, Listening Tree. While some bright spots attempt to glimmer like “Pay Tomorrow” and “When Every Day’s A Number”, which are both indeed agreeable but even they seem to lack structure or unifying themes and subsequently seem out of place and incomplete. Overall, Listening Tree is all about Tim, and his deep closeted skeletons and inner demons, which are far too abstract to be even remotely relatable or fun to sweat it out to their exorcisms.
