DJ Hell
International Deejay Gigolos CD Eleven
International Deejay Gigolo compilations should be sold exclusively at Costco. Each two disc collection of the label’s latest offerings is an economy pack of thumping electro that is often too much to consume in one sitting. The eleventh installment of the DJ Hell-curated series is no different’a double-disc’s worth of some of the most exciting techno sounds of the moment that grows a bit tedious because of its running time. The excessive length of these releases detracts from the listener’s ability to enjoy them as a unified whole, forcing one to enjoy it on the level of sampler rather than a full selection.
CD Eleven has its fair share of fine moments that showcase some of the label’s best work. I.M.B.’s ‘Kill Bill’, with its skittering trumpet samples, cymbal bell syncopations, and relentless kick drum drive, is one of the most intriguing sonic creations you’ll hear this year. The heavily-reverbed, cinematic ‘Back 2 Black,’ courtesy of Herman Schwartz, manages to be meditative and moody, robotic yet human. DJ Hell is one hell of a tastemaker, and he certainly makes sure that buyers get their money’s worth. But perhaps a release such as CD Eleven would benefit from being dished out in smaller doses.
