Anjulie – Advance (Review)

Advance

Anjulie is certainly not new to the game, but most people probably don’t know that. Working with different artists and producers for years, she has finally found an appropriate time to release Advance, her newest album. Unfortunately, this may not quite advance her career.

Like most R&B singers that get popular, Anjulie has all the right tools. A unique, distinct voice, a certain vision and style, and definitely a treat for the eyes. However, in such a competitive music industry, this is not always enough, and I am not sure if Anjulie has the extra spark on Advance that is needed to be truly recognized. “Boom,” the opening track, is the best thing about the album. A poppy song with an exotic flare, “Boom” allows her album to be taken seriously from the beginning…a good hook or thesis statement, if you will. Unfortunately her other songs are just like paragraphs that lack hard evidence. “Rain,” the following track, is painfully normal and uneventful. The rest of her songs on Advance are really hit and miss. Some are catchy enough to enjoy, others are boring enough to forget about.

Advance is a wishy washy record that does not showcase Anjulie’s real talent, nor expose her great potential. Although this album did not do the trick, it peeked into the soul of Anjulie enough that I am looking forward to seeing what she puts out next.
