Greensleeves is reggae. If you like reggae, you like Greensleeves. Lucky for Greensleeves fans’and lucky for the label itself’they got DJ Andy Smith to mix their latest release, Greensleeves Document, a compilation of Greensleeves artists throughout their existence. And DJ Andy Smith, the Portishead tour DJ and club legend, does not disappoint in delivering this historical reggae experience.
With 27 tracks, Andy still manages to find the perfect opening one, “Fire House Rock” from The Wailing Souls. This classic reggae song lights a perfect flame that burns through the whole album. Scientist, Half Pint, Bushman, Brother Culture, all great artists featured on the album, with many more as well. Songs like “War is in the Dance” and then “Ice Cream Love,” Andy shows range and originality in his mixing. On top of that he brings his club vibe along with him, adding in shoutouts, reverb effects, and other things that make you feel like you’re in front of the reggae sound systems watching the DJ do his thing.
If you are a reggae fan, Greensleeves Document is the perfect compilation of tunes to remind you why you love the style. If you’re not a reggae fan, this album still managers to remain relative and entertaining, while still giving a somewhat historical lesson on the music of reggae.
