Qemists, The
Join the Q
Ninjatune’s own British electro-trio, The Qemists, are back at it, only this time instead of tackling the remix game they’re breaking down genre barriers on their latest opus Join the Q.
Right out of the gate The Qemists come hard with the track ‘Stompbox’, pouring droning synth’s into your ears then pounding ear drums to a pulp with wailing guitars and spastic drums. ‘The perfect high’ is another electro-rock banger, infusing the elements of both genres to kick your teeth back into your head.
This record isn’t all about the hard rock vibes though: drum ‘n bass is another frontier blazed on this album as well as beats of the hip-hop variety courtesy of Beardy Man, the UK’s crowned king of beatbox. Wiley, a UK O.G. and mentor to Dizzee Rascal also drops in on the track ‘Dem na like me’, which fuses electronic, reggae and hip-hop with a tinge of rock added for good measure.
No doubt that this is a lively album, however like many albums utilizing the synthesizer and drums at break neck speeds, its downfall is spots of monotony. The good thing about this record is that The Qemists make an honest effort to include fans of multiple genres on this record, but unfortunately with songs like ‘Drop audio’ and ‘On the run’ blending together seamlessly the adrenaline levels begin to fall only to prompt a swift skip on the CD player.
