Dim Light

After releasing a head-turning 3 track 7inch last year, one of the newer, more promising PPM artists deliver a debut album that lives up to it’s hype. Gun Outfit’s sound is definitely unique, drawing heavily from old school punk bands like the Meat Puppets, but still maintaining an accessible melodic quality. The great thing about it is that it doesn’t sound forced. The problem with genre fusing seems to almost always be consistency. There’s a great deal of difficulty that comes with trying to make clashing sounds compliment each other. What happens usually is that different tracks will tend to each be geared toward different genres. Gun Outfit does an excellent job of making grimy prog-rock punk that seems like a logical combination. While tracks like “Had Enough” and “On the Beach” maintain an frantic, strictly punk vibe throughout, the trio will often seamlessly switch styles within the same track. “Cocaine Woman” begins a punk rhythm before leveling out into an oasis of serene vocals and melancholy guitar chords. Other moments of calm on the album delve into a folk-rock interpretation, with bluesy guitar work and growling lead vocals that channel Johnny Cash in a grungy Northwestern kind of way. Gun Outfit has a voice, and it only took one album to find it.
