Black Lips, The – 200 Million Thousand

No Tags

The Black Lips’ reputation for obscene live shows has granted them an increasing amount of popularity across different music markets. Everywhere except India that is.
In Jan earlier this year, The Lips were on tour in India. For the first few shows they kept their act fairly clean, sans the piss and vomit of typical Black Lips shows. However when the Indian audiences didn’t seem impressed, the Atlanta rockers reverted back to their normal debauchery. They gave the crowd what they wanted to see: punk rock antics.
What ensued sent the police on a mission to kick The Lips out of the country. Guitarists Cole Alexander and Ian Saint Pe kissed each other, Alexander mooned the crowd, and then proceeded to drop his pants and strum his guitar with his junk. The Black Lips gave the crowd a dose of untainted punk mayhem.
And this is what 200 Million Thousand is all about: unadulterated, rough-around-the-edges rock ‘n’ roll. Very simplistic in melody and progression, each track on 200 Million Thousand is a tube-driven, distorted mess, complete with classic Brit-punk vocals. Twangy and overdriven guitars are matched with screams and pissed-off vocals full of attitude, creating a highly energetic punch, reminiscent of a Black Lips live performance. Who knew that punk and psychedelics together can create such an drunken garage-rock frenzy.
