The so-called tropical punk trio wanders down a much darker path with their latest: a 5 track EP offering. The frantic rhythms are still there, and there’s still that accessible alternative twist. But it’s apparent that the SoCal based trio is using the EP format as an experimental outlet, trying to feel out the direction in which to progress their sound. The whiny punk vocals so prevalent on last year’s Skeleton are replaced with droning chants, and the guitar work takes on a more relaxed and traditional tone, as opposed to their usual discordant high-pitched riffs. As a whole, the experiment seems to be a success. The one exception being the drum-less guitar feedback-fueled ‘Endless Sleep,’ which plays out like any other clich’d let’s-make-noise-instead-of-music track. Besides the single misstep, 4/5 ain’t bad. ‘House’ and ‘Wild Heart,’ an interesting cover of the Stevie Nicks tune, are the disc’s stand out tracks. Die-hard fans may not like the style change, but I think it’s a step in the right direction.
