It looks like there’s a trend going on here. There’s Black Mountain, there’s The Black Angels. They both sound like stoner versions of Black Sabbath. And now there’s Black Math Horseman, a Los Angeles based foursome that crafts dark, hypnotizing psych-rock pseudo-metal masterpieces. Their debut album, Wyllt, was recorded and produced by Scott Reeder of Kyuss, and on songs like ‘Deerslayer’ and ‘Tyrant,’ his influence comes through loud and clear. But don’t think they’re just the newest stoner metal band on the block. Black Math Horseman set themselves apart in two ways. One, they extend some of their jams to epic proportions, like the 11-minute ‘Bird Of All Faiths And None/Bell From Madrone.’ Two, the ethereal vocals of Sera Timms lend the band a big, soaring sound, that’s much amiss from most of their contemporaries.
Black Math Horseman recently signed to Tee Pee Records (Witch, Graveyard), and their debut album launches in Apr. If you like stoner metal with the word Black in it, don’t miss it.
