Last night, Feb 11, 2009 was the second edition of Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg ‘NoiseMakers’ at the 92Y Tribeca in New York. I had missed the first NoiseMakers which featured DJ Premier but caught a little taste on youtube of the show and the hilarious discussion with DJ Premiere on Biggie and Puffy. The second edition was something not to be missed as it featured Hip Hop journalist, twitterer, and drummer for The Roots, Questlove.

Imagine ‘Inside The Actor’s Studio’ but with Rosenberg and a live performance by Igmar Thomas and The Cypher band, presented by Revive Da Live. The favorable band had rehearsed classic hits and lesser known works by Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson like ‘I Am Music’ from Electric Circus album, D’Angelo and Macy Gray’s’Ghetto Heaven,’ Bilal’s ‘Sometime’s,’ and of course medleys from his band, The Roots.
The room was packed with every table taken, a small standing section, and a front row of superfans. The discussion between Rosenberg and Questlove, who told his story best from behind the drum set, spoke of his childhood growing up on the road, the hilarious stories that make him the drummer he is now and personal tales of his music background. Ahmir shared the milestones of his career and the influence of growing up in a music family with comedic episodes such as how his father would fine him twenty five dollars for playing more than drum standards, the time he first met Black Thought, and the makings of The Roots. He also shared more endearing stories and insight on his career like his regret with the ‘What They Do’ video, The Roots early relationship with Diddy, and simply answered, ‘Yes’ to Rosenberg’s most controversial question of the night; ‘Is J Dilla the greatest rapping producer of all time?’.
The Noisemakers event has legs and a very honest concept that brings together music fans, industry professionals, journalists and more to witness the first hand accounts of our favorite artists in a very candid and comfortable manner.
The real question is, who will Peter Rosenberg be talking to next?
Who would you like to see?
