R. Kelly’s New Album to Be Untitled

rkelly460 R. Kellys New Album to Be Untitled

The self-proclaimed king of R&B has announced at an Atlanta pre-Grammy party, mostly likely in a drunken daze, that his long-delayed follow-up to 2007’s Double Up will be called Untitled. The Pied Piper’s forthcoming album was at one point slated to be titled 12 Play: Fourth Quarter, and it is unclear whether Untitled will feature any tracks of the version of Fourth Quarter that circulated online last year. Kelly has had much better luck naming songs than album; while he’s dubbed three (almost four) of his albums with the 12 Play brand name presumably because he couldn’t think of anything else, he’s also responsible for some of the greatest song names in music history (see: ‘Sex Planet,’ ‘Sex Weed,’ ‘The Zoo’). ‘Hair Braider,’ ‘Skin,’ and ‘Playas Get Lonely,’ singles released last year to build anticipation up to the release of Fourth Quarter that was never to come, were only minor successes, garnering only little airplay and largely lacking that absurd Kels touch that makes his music transcend typical R&B.

According to MTV News, Kelly got on the mic while he was sitting in VIP (presumably smoking and drinking and kickin’ it, and just tryin’ to have a good time) to make the grand pronouncement: ‘I’m out here working on the muthafuckin’ album. I’m working on a new album and I’m calling that muthafucker Untitled. Y’all call it what y’all want.’ Kels is a true believer in democracy.

He then reportedly proceeded to sing some lines from his seminal hit ‘Bump n’ Grind’ in true Kelly fashion. Here’s hoping that he reworked the entire record that most BitTorrent trolling R&B fans heard last year. That particular effort sounded like Kels trying to reclaim his credibility as an R&B singer, and honestly, we’d much rather listen to him make sleazy come-ons and bitching about how women don’t trust him (they really shouldn’t) over an unmistakably infectious Kelly piano riff.
