MC Esoteric
Serve or Suffer
With art, timing is everything and with comic book-based films seemingly at the height of their popularity, the timing could not be more perfect for MC Esoteric’s Serve or Suffer. Revolving around several characters from the Marvel Universe, Esoteric (7L & Esoteric) takes listen through a 23 track gem that should make any fanboy or child of the ’80s smile. Featuring classic cartoon voice samples from the Avengers, Spiderman, Xmen, and various other related characters, Esoteric creates themes around these samples to create a funky sonic adventure that will have you ‘going comic book crazy’. From more Drum N Bass fueled cuts to classic, raw hip-hop joints, Esoteric is able to keep the sounds funky and loose by letting the pure escapist enjoyment of the comics move the album along. In addition, his inclusion of video game sound bites and other sonic samples from the ’80s make this a piece that both fans of hip-hop and pop culture enthusiasts will appreciate. He perfectly closes out this set with ‘Bobba Fett Still Thrills Me’. By reminding listeners the long lasting enjoyment that comes from ones first love, Esoteric is able to make a convincing statement about the activities we are passionate about (whether that is hip-hop, comic books, videogames, or anything else)and stress the importance of never losing sight of these passions.
