Last week, we had the privilege of checking out Coheed and Cambria at Madison Square Garden on their tour with Trivium and Slipknot. The crowd was what was to be expected at a Slipknot show – lots of testosterone, little women (as in, few women, not the novel), and lots of friendly, if slightly concerned, mothers waiting in the rotunda for their sons.
The Garden would seem to be the perfect spot to accommodate C + C’ s proggy, arena rock leanings. Yet while the band itself brought an energy level far greater than the fans waiting for Slipknot, the muddied sound made it to difficult at times to discern just how sick these guys really are. Still, a minor gripe. Claudio + co. delivered a 6-song, 40-minute set drawing heavily from 2007′ s Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow. Given the shortened time compared to their headlining sets, the band impressively utilized every minute, displaying theatrics but focusing on their technical virtuosity.
We admit, we missed the shows they did at New York’ s Terminal 5 last year, but were psyched to hear about the Mar 17 release of Neverender: Children of The Fence Edition, a 9-disc set (5 DVDs/4 CDs) featuring the band’ s full 4-night run where each night, they played one of their albums in full. According to a release, ‘The box set documents the New York stand (as well as clips from all 3 other cities) in one massive package that will include four live DVDs, four live audio CDs, one documentary DVD, a 10×10 hardcover 48-page photo book and a 7-1/2′ custom metal dragonfly.’ Jesus. That’ s a lot of stuff.
Oh yeah. Slipknot played too. There were many of them. There were a lot of drums. They like noise. It was heavy.
