Messy Marv
Drapped Up and Chipped Out 3
Messy Marv has been working hard as of late with the high number of solo, collab and compilation releases. Not too long after releasing Cake & Ice Cream we see Marv dropping Draped Up & Chipped Out 3.
“Imma Superstar,” the album opener, almost sounds like it comes from Houston, with it’s smooth piano riffs, syncopated hi-hats and echoing stereo claps. Marv’s lackadaisical flow works well as he rides the beat like a true player while the autotuned chorus, reminiscent of an old school jam, compliments the song. “Throw Ya Hood Up” (feat. Mistah F.A.B.) has the two Cali rappers spitting over a very minimalistic track consisting of raucous drums with a shifting synth that creates an instant party vibe. Both represent where they’re from and it’s near-impossible not to nod to this one. Strong Arm Steady vets Krondon and Mitchy Slick come through on “Wanna B Me”, a bubbly synth heavy track replete with alternating snaps and claps that reminds of a club experience while drunk. Good times, indeed.
With 21 tracks, it’s difficult to not include songs that just shouldn’t have made the cut. “Back Back” sounds like a Lil’ Jon throwaway with the plinkering piano and sharp synth riffs that makes it very skip worthy, while “On Errythang” screams of an old Trina track with the horribly sung hook, stock Casio sounds and half-hearted concept of wanting a female to want you back.
Draped Up & Chipped Out 3 isn’t groundbreaking, but it does solidify Marv’s hustle’to release a large quantity of music to keep his name heavy in the streets. The congruity of this album is minimal and it sounds like it should’ve come out 10 years ago. But some of the songs here are sure to be included in a Best Of album, if there ever is one.
