Just Like Heaven - A Tribute to The Cure

It’s been only a few months since The Cure released their thirteenth studio album, 4:13 Dream, but Just Like Heaven – A Tribute to The Cure offers a refreshing twist on some of the British alt-rockers’ classic singles. American Laundromat Records’ compilation brings new vitality to the spirit of The Cure’s work, introducing many perhaps lesser-known artists whose covers sound as diverse as the band’s original recordings.

The most easily discernible thread throughout the works is the classic, buzzy ’80s reverberating synths that distinguished much of The Cure’s original sound. Listeners will recognize the synthy string melodies on Dean & Britta’s ‘Friday I’m In Love,’ the chiming of Elizabeth Harper & The Matinee’s cover of ‘Pictures of You,’ and the poppy, electro bassline on The Rosebuds’ version of ‘The Walk’ as reminiscent of the British foursome’s original tracks. The selection of tracks encompasses The Cure’s darker tones, as in The Poems’ ‘10:15 Saturday Night,’ while Joy Zipper honor the punk-pop anthem ‘Just Like Heaven.’ Each cover is distinctly different in its approach, allowing every track to seem a thoughtful dedication to The Cure’s alternative pop-rock legacy.
