Peace Love Weed 3D

While he finds himself caught up in the gibber-jabber that is the world of ‘intelligent dance music’ (IDM) as termed by countless bloggers navigating the ambient sphere of sound, Eliot Lipp’s latest release is just plain old good music. Taking various snippets of work composed on drum machines and synths and recording them onto tape, Lipp then cut up the source tape and resampled the work along with live instruments. The result is an album that is complex and intricate, marrying guitar chords with electro beats perfectly in a union that seems meant to be.

Imagined by Lipp as part of a soundtrack for a sci-fi thriller, the first single, ‘Beamrider,’ is work that is dark and eerie, creating a sense of undeniable foreboding. Lipp’s characteristic glitches are present throughout Peace Love Weed 3D and italo disco influences infuse the album with a psychedelic touch. What’s most exciting about all of this, however, is that Lipp retains the core hip hop and funk influences that have been central to so much of his work. ‘Yeah,’ ‘Proceed’ and ‘PLW3D’ all bump in the best way possible, and the dude’s production skills are no question. The album begs for a bit more variety, perhaps in tempo and overall mood, but Lipp’s latest is a solid body of work that succeeds in perfecting the definition of a chill groove.
