Mash-ups in the world of music are nothing but what do you do when you’re tired of dropping Britney Spears lyrics over Justice anthems all day? How about “sampling” two classic video games and combining them for some seriously-reworked Nintendo love.
Such is the case in Megaman vs. Ghosts and Goblins, a fully functional online mash-up developed from two of my favorite childhood games created by mystery-man Staticreator. This Flash-based, online rework of the classics has all the classic pitfalls and netherworld creatures of the original G ‘n’ G title only, this time, our protagist is none other than Dr. Light’s robotic boy hero, Mega-Man. Blasting your way to success is a breeze once you upgrade to Mega-Man’s healthy life meter and advanced jumping capabilities from Arthur original crude controls and limp-wristed lance throwing.
Of course, reworking the N.E.S. is nothing ground-breaking (even this nugget of interweb goodness is from a few years back.) Contemporary artists Cory Archangel, for example, has been have been hacking classic cartridges for some time now and reworking them into gallery pieces such as “I Shot Andy Warhol,” a hacked version of “Hogan’s Alley” with images of Pope John Paul II, Flavor Flav, and Andy Warhol in lieu of the traditional cops and robbers.
But while Cory’s pieces debut at NYC’s Deitch galley, or make their way into the Whitney Biennial, Staticreator’s work is just hanging out on the internet, giving you something to do with your coffee break beyond reading this blog.
