The folk pop craze rushed in and out like walking in on parental love making…the vision was fast, but it’s burned into the back of your skull. For some, it fades over time, and for others, they can’t let go. Tiago La Is Losing The Plot, otherwise known as Drew Brown, can’t let go, and for good reason’he’s actually talented at his choosen genre.
In keeping the theme off oddly worded titles, the first track, “Lucien Guide,” radiates with awkward and simple tone. “I’m your only friend/I’m your lucien guide,” trembles behind plucked guitar, light piano, and falsetto backing vocals. This opener leads into “Ages For Avedon,” an acoustically driven track that calls upon past sounds from acts like The Reindeer Section and Pedro the Lion. Wes Anderson and his future films would be happy to hear that Brown also holds a striking resemblance to the late Elliot Smith. The rest of the album stays within its boundaries as expected, but still reaches for originality. “Casualty At Stative Square” is a fairly simple guitar/vocal piece, but is immediately followed by “Tiago La,” which keeps it tempo via electronic drums: a seemingly unheard action in folk-pop music. But Drew definitely makes it fit.
Tiago La Is Losing The Plot might be a couple years late in popularity, but is right on the mark as far as quality music goes. Drew has already traveled the world playing his music, and even did some work with Beck along the way, but I see his career just taking off: Tiago La Is Losing The Plot is the spark.
