With the inauguration of Barack Obama and 2009 well underway it’s time to look towards the future. We’ve had a really great couple years in the blogosphere but we May have reached a stalemate. There are too many blogs that publish too many rubbish tracks that sound like everything loyal internetters have already heard.

If you’re like me you’ve been dying for some fresh sounds to burn out in a week and dismiss, so that the next best thing can fill that void a week later. It’s a culture of consumption and I’m here to feed you peoplez.

Let’s talk Disco. Let’s talk about that gratuitous label that’s thrown around for everything remotely danceable. I’ve got my fingers crossed that 2009 is the year for disco or more specifically ‘hipster disco’ or ‘beard house‘ or DFAish sounding disco-house that is accessible to kids that shop at American Apparel and Urban Outfitters (can someone come up with a witty name for it already?)

The producers and DJs are coming from all walks of life and different parts of the world but i’m mentally pretending they’ve got one common goal. That goal is to take kids who stumbled into the electronic world on an educational voyage similar to that of The Magic School Bus.

Artists like Aeroplane, Tiedye, Holy Ghost and others have been creating this sound for some time but more recently a new crop has emerged. Fools Gold Records‘ very own – Treasure Fingers bridges the gap between Blog House and Beard House beautifully. Newer artists like Snowcone and pros like Sally Shapiro have proven that disc09′ is a level playing ground for males and females alike and I love it.

Songs however are just one part of the equation and while Disco, Funk, and House centric parties have been around in major cities for quite some time. More recently these same parties have been reproduced with better haircuts and quirkier fashion and i’m all for it. My favorite party in Los Angeles just so happens to be one of these gems. It’s run by my brothers in arms at No Culture and it’s aptly named the same thing.

This week they had JD Twitch from optimo and it was a well good time, the week before they had the genius of Dam Funk on the decks and as you can probably guess it was sweat on the dancefloor and years of musical gems pumping through the speakers.

What does all of this mean? It means America is catching up with the rest of the world culturally on multiple levels. We’ve got major record labels shaking in their boots trying to emulate the success of genius indie label heads who genuinely care about music and are providing a product worth listening to. We’ve got street artists doing it their way and making it to the forefront of American design. We’ve got a country that has seen past race in and elected a person into office who ran on a platform of progressive change. And most importantly we’ve got a country full of shaggy haired college kids and cute girls in leggings with ‘Aly-Us – Follow Me’ quotes as their twitter updates.

The world is a better place because of disc09 so celebrate with some great songs/mixes:

Snowcone – Dusty Dream (Dub)

Britney Spears – Circus (Snowcone Rmx)

Diamond Cut – Teardrops (Treasure Fingers Filter Disco Edit)

Dam Funk Live at No Culture(full set)
