Buraka Som Sistema – Black Diamond (Review)

Buraka Som Sistema

Black Diamond

Buraka Som Sistema’s latest, Black Diamond, has enough vim to start a sweaty conga line on the hippest of dance floors. The Portuguese kuduro masters bring friends like M.I.A., DJ Znobia, Petty, and Kano to contribute on the thirteen tracks. This much anticipated full-length is a breakbeat dance between South American and African rhythms.

But Black Diamond might also be a sonic meditation on the blood diamond trade and those affected by it: a sample at the end of “Aqui Para Voces” (feat. Dieze Tigrona) hints, “Angolan diamonds are some of the best diamonds in the world. Eighty percent of Angola’s diamonds are gem quality. These are the diamonds that everybody wants.” There’s also a taste of their hit single from 2006, “Yah!” (feat. Petty). The most popular track no doubt is “Sound of Kuduro” which besides featuring DJ Znobia, Saborosa, and Puto Prata, blasts with M.I.A.’s recognizable guest vocals. Check out Black Diamond for a well crafted taste of progressive kuduro mixing up the jungle and breakbeat scene.
