Joy Divison Documentary (Video)

Not sure how long this will be up for, but, ’07’s documentary “Joy Division” is streaming in its entirity, via Pitchfork. Helmed by Grant Gee (”Meeting People Is Easy”), the doc is the third installment in a series of films which began with 2002’s “24 Hour Party People” and seek to break down the historic assent of post-punk Manchester, its bands, and its masterminds.

Having had the luck of screening “Divison” at AFI Fest last year, I can well say that the grainy stock footage organized by Gee, interspersed with a scratchy, haunting soundtrack lends itself well to the story of the world’s most industrial city, to rise of Joy Division and the emotional fall of, lead singer, Ian Curtis. I can instantly say that most touching to watch are the last words from Factory Records honcho Tony Wilson, who, due to his losing battle with cancer, (he passed away shortly after sitting down for his series of interviews) was already visibly weak and highly reflective of the history of a town which built one of the world’s first intercity railways, an overwhelming number of textile factories, gave us The Smiths, Queer As Folk, The Hacienda, and a band that immortalized the sentiment of love tearing us apart.

Great interviews in this one, great imagery too. Do enjoy.
