Zomby
Where Were You In '92
Some folks would criticize Zomby for putting out a nostalgic record that doesn’t fully showcase his artistic chops. I would call those folks techno nerds, and I would tell them to kindly shut up because good music is good music. Zomby re-creates the early 90s techno sound with a loving touch, throwing in ghostly contemporary samples in order to properly date the album. The mix flows seamlessly, hardly missing an electro-jungle beat. A slightly bizarre and off-kilter remix of Gucci Mane’s ‘Pillz’ momentarily disrupts the party, only to pick right back up again with ‘Hench,’ a double-time club bouncer. The beats are filled with those unmistakable electronic piano loops that conjure up images of parachute pants and high-top fades. Zomby even goes so far as to call upon the Street Fighter II theme as a basis for the final track. The throwback sound of Where Were You In ‘92 may get a bit repetitive, but I see no problem with an artist calling back to his roots, especially when dealing with a genre that is based on constant sampling and remixing. Nothing mind-boggling here, but Zomby keeps the club hopping with this one.
