Khrysis and DJ Rhettmatic – On the Boards with the Heat Vol.2

Originality is always hard to come by, no matter what the subject. And when it comes, it catches the ear. That is exactly what Khrysis and DJ Rhettmatic from the Beat Junkies do on On the Boards with the Heat Vol.2. A 31 track beat compilation of Khrysis’ best, in Donuts like fashion, this album does not hold back. And it definitely helps that not only does DJ Rhettmatic stamp it, but mix the entire album, which is something that most beat-albums don’t explore.

As most beat albums go, this one’s first track is “Intro.” There is not too much flavor there, but it bleeds into “King Kong,” which shows us Khrysis’ true colors…and they’re bright. It’s a booming beat with an orchestral background to fill it in. And Khrysis takes advantage of the diversity in beats with OtBwtHVol.2. “Cool as a Fan” owns an incredibly relaxed atmosphere with soulful vibes brought on by old samples and keyboard techniques. The following track, “Back at It,” is much in the same realm. “Keep it to the Side” is on some Flying Lotus “ish” with spacey snare claps and synth sounds, but still holds to Khyrsis’ perfection of hip-hop booming beats.

With 31 tracks, you can only imagine the kind of influences involved in this album. Funk, soul, rock, jazz, etc., Khrysis certainly held himself to high standards and delivered. With DJ Rhettmatic’s mixing, the album presents itself as a flawless display of bpm and hip-hoppery. It has every style of hip-hop beats that anyone can hope for, and then a little bit more. As far as beat-albums go, this one is On the Boards with the Heat.
