MP3 :: New Antony and the Johnsons

CryingLight cover (small) MP3 :: New Antony and the Johnsons

Being as I was running on one and a half hours of sleep and harshed from three weeks of familial abuse, I was pretty jazzed to arrive in LAX this week and, while waiting for luggage, to find out that much sought after (see Bjork and Hercules and Love Affair) Mercury Prize golden boy Antony Hegarty will be rejoining The Johnsons this year for a new release entitled ‘The Crying Light’.

The album, as LP’s are tending to do these days, will be made available via an instant digital release for those who chose to preoder to the disc prior to official street date (which is on Jan 20th via, personal loves, Secretly Canadian). Sounds like a pretty clever set up to me.

The teaser track for this disc is called ‘Another World’ and that’s about, per Ant’s usual style, where the music sounds it comes from. If ‘World’ is an indicator of the disc as a whole, most will be touched to find the familiar comps of quiet piano, flawless throaty vocals and their tender overdubs. They’ll also find that despite dabbling in cosmic disco and Icelandic weirdness over the past couple of years, Antony’s unique melancholy and warm-blanket feel is still intact, if not made better.

So make some mulled wine and open a drafty window, this one a real mid-winter weeper.
