Fires of Rome
You Kingdom You
The Great Fire of Rome lasted about 6 days and 6 nights, caused by the Roman emperor Nero in 64 CE. Fast forward about 1945 years and here we are at the release of an album by a band taking its namesake for a disaster of the Roman Empire. Fires of Rome are an enigma’their musical identity a loose and assorted one, much like the uncontrolled fire that must have ravaged through the cobblestone boulevards of the imperial capital.
Aside from the historical lesson, the lads are quite an interesting listen. They begin their debut You Kingdom You with ‘Dawn Lament,’ a track that showcases their talents in the strong beat with complementary resounding vocals. The song provides the necessary movement shifts, settling down whilst providing an emphatic vocal uprising, leading to a contagious guitar crescendo, becoming the definitive part of the song and the link that keeps the entire thing from falling apart. Standing out as well is ‘Set in Stone,’ with its supercharged bass’it has been remixed by electronic dudes Dada Life and released on one of those ElectroBiT compilations. However, the debut is not without its faults’ the cut ‘Bronx Bombadier’ exposes the band’s fun but naive side, repeating the lyrics ‘don’t fuck with me when I’m not sober‘ showing the full range of the band’s lyrical talent, choosing to constantly pulse a one-liner. The final diagnosis is that the lyrics are much less polished than their instrumentation’they try to be catchy, and that’s about it.
