Bubble Project, The
Technicolor Dream Machine
The UK quartet from Sunderland known as The Bubble Project is reminiscent of the ’80s cartoon “Kidd Video.” Each episode began with the four eager musicians performing in a warehouse when suddenly they were transported into an animated realm where they would have to be ‘musical slaves’ forever. The Bubble Project’s latest effort, The Technicolor Dream Machine takes listeners on an animated adventure filled with love, hope, villains, and danger where their melodious, often distorted brew of music beautifully captures the fables they are singing about.
Some of the characters that appear in the Dream Machine are Mr. X, Magic Dan, Vixillian Clauf, and beautiful female scientists. Maintaining the carefree sensibility of ’80s rock and the colorful imagery of the cartoons that this music often accompanied, TTDM is a pleasure to listen too because it places story-telling, creativity, and (gasp) fun ahead of industry notions of what music should sound like. Continuing to do this will do more than help them to avoid becoming a ‘musical slave’: it will help to continue to broaden their opportunities and expand their listener’s outlook on the different directions music can go.
