Savage
Savage Island
An artist with a name like Savage would make one assume that he is going to bring the heat to a track. Lyrically annihilate the track with his long standing metaphors and unique flow. Unfortunately, this particular album from Savage sounds closer to a bunch of noise rather than a rap album. ‘Knock A Hater Out’ is my first example with the chorus being ‘Blew! Knock a hater out with that booyakabooyaka!’. Some tracks do require raw emotion of that kind but not throughout the entire album. Savage spends much of the album yelling and screaming rather than rapping his poorly done lyrics.
Much of the production on the album does not sound professionally done, rather as if they made the beats in the kitchen of a family members home. He also spends much time on stereotypical subject matters like explaining how tough he is and how he can pull so many women in the club and make them his next conquests. The concepts are old and played out. Prime examples of this are songs like ‘Bottles From The Bar’. The chorus is the now overdone screwed technique and describes how he buys bottles from the bar and he has two and three girls in his bed when he wakes up. As a listener, I am have become bored with this type of bravado. Where is the new material? There is none.
One song did strike me and that is because it was much more honest and personal. ‘Family Tribute’ is introspective and describes some of his experiences growing up poor and how much loyalty he feels towards his sisters and mother. He also touches on his mothers alcohol abuse and how he hold no grudges against her. He goes on to say how he stayed in trouble when he was a teenager, robbing peoples homes and that he is thankful to his sisters and brothers for saving him from that lifestyle.
Overall the album has the same material that we have heard for years only this time it has been placed on wack beats and the rapper has taken the approach of yelling his lyrics. Guest Appearances by other wack artists like Souljah Boy does not help his case or his album.
