South Central – Owl of Minerva, The (Review)

South Central

Owl of Minerva, The

South Central ropes indie and electro together as it should be. They aren’t annoying (and I won’t name the names of certain other UK electro-rock outfits that are). They wear hoods during performances, preferring to let their music do the showing-off. Plus, any band that names Bootsie Collins as an influence pretty much can do no wrong. And even though they’re sound is more Daft Punk than Funkadelic, they campion a mad decent house groove throughout their most recent release, Owl of Minerva. Each track builds off a hard and dirty four-four beat, with some vertical rhythms thrown in on a few tracks for good measure. “Golden Dawn” is highly textured with a brilliant grind, and has a seductive beat equal to other tracks like “Aeon” and “Nothing Can Go Wrong.” Owl of Minerva is only the beginning (though the track list spans over two years of work): South Central plans to release a full length debut in early 2009.
