I Love Techno 2008

Boys Noize has developed a reputation for compiling and utilizing odd clashing sounds. At the helm of this year’s edition of the I Love Techno series, he does much of the same. Instead of catering specifically to the dancefloor crowd, he creates a mix that is a maze of highs and lows — a jarring bombardment of sound. That isn’t to say that there aren’t dance cuts on the record. It’s Boys Noize’s tendency to drop the beat out and create long anticipatory pauses before smacking you in the face with it again that makes it difficult to see this as being a mix that would play well in a club. On ‘Rat Alert,’ for example, dive-bomber synths lace the beat until the track peters out into a wasteland consisting of little more than shakers, chirping birds, and faint sirens. This lasts for a full minute before the bass drum thumps back to life. There’s also the piercing electro-metallic stabs on Errorsmith’s ‘In A Sweat’ that unkindly slice your eardrums to ribbons, or the awkward canter of the sample-driven Devil’s Run. Like I said, not exactly a mix for your average club-goer, however it is undoubtedly mixed with a masterful hand. As diverse as the tracks are, Boys Noize manages to create a near flawless patchwork of some of the more interesting offerings from the techno world.
