Anavan
Cover Story
Two of the three members in alternative group Anavan are from Ketchikan, Alaska’the town famous for its ‘bridge to nowhere.’ Sound familiar? Alaska certainly had its fair share of publicity this past year, you must remember Republican Governor Sarah Palin’s ascendance into the political spotlight? Luckily for us, the largest state in the U.S. has more to offer than ice fishing, hockey and the-now-infamous pitbull in lipstick. Enter Anavan. The trio’consisting of Bret, Molly and Aaron’go all in on their sophomore opus Cover Story. The album has a slight affinity to the pop world, but there is no denying the group’s electro-rock roots. Tracks like ‘Take It Back’ and ‘The Perfect Sound’ radiate with energy and life. Anavan’s neon sound is anything but conventional. In fact, their most obvious break from convention is the obvious lack of guitar. But that’s easily forgotten in this sonic kaleidoscope of an album (’Boom’ and ‘Skin Like Heather’). Cover Story’s sound goes without categorization for the 40 minute duration’aesthetically bouncing all over the place. It’s definitely entertaining, but the music doesn’t really go anywhere. But maybe that’s just it. If so, Anavan are all the more fascinating for it.
