Jon Gaiser
Blank Fade
Jon Gaiser’s debut album is an atmospheric experiment – an ingeniously simplified techno soundscape that sets a dark and unsettling tone from track 1. ‘Volve’ the first track, plunges the listener into Gaiser’s ominously dank world. Sparsely placed kick drums and echoes seem to signify footsteps down some long and winding sewer system, while electronic blips and clicks translate into images of dripping water and crawling insects. On ‘Ciliate With’ high pitched bells become a bubbling stew of organic techno-funk. This oozes from the pipes along with a creepy ethereal buzzing that suggests something otherworldly lurking around any given corner. This is the place Gaiser has taken us to, and now that your ears have become accustomed, you can’t escape until the final track. This is kind of frustrating – unless you opt to simply turn off the CD. Gaiser seems to have mastered his craft of atmospheric electronic sound sculpture. It’s disappointing, however, not to find any signs of future growth or experimentation. At its best, this is a cinematic listening experience, but I dare you to sit through the entire film.
