Here’s part two of their set at All Points West’s second day. The mic has to get re-taped on the sousaphone and they keep playing…?uestlove bangs his drum extra hard to get Captin Kirk’s attention, Kirk misses him, they keep grooving…At about the 3:06 mark he throws his drum stick with the gentlest of releases and it floats — it doesn’t whiz — through the air, getting Kirk’s attention…they keep grooving, tighten up for the close, laughing afterwards. This is what it looks like when musicians know how to keep on keeping on, as always, for the love of grooves they master, and for the fans…who love them and show up to their concerts…?uesto says “I need a minute” — but he isn’t really given a minute…and they keep playing…and when the call goes out for a moment of laughter for Bernie Mac at 7:19, after his first sousaphone solo, “Tuba Gooding, Jr.” just has to get up with another round, knowing his onstage responsibility to the tradition that a lone horn blower carries on whenever it’s time to celebrate a departed spirit, and again the band rolls with it, keeps on grooving. Beautiful.
