Miz Metro here reporting on one of L.A’s hottest soul nights, “Strictly Social” which graced N.Y.C for one night only at Sutra Lounge this past Wednesday.
The event was “strictly dope” from where I was sitting, I mean dancing, vibe-ing out to some of the hottest up and coming nu-soul talent around. Being a singer myself I have high standards, and I can honestly say these performers brought the heat. Vice Lounge cruised right through technical difficulties and filled the room with his earthy sound and seemed to have fun playing off the live accompaniment of his guitarist. Next up, with no introduction needed- Jade demanded the rooms attention as she began to sing “Ordinary Girl”. If there is one thing Jade isn’t, it’s ordinary. Jade has an extraordinary voice, a style all her own, and is on her way to the top.
With a tough act to follow, Sarah White was in her zone and got up and did her thang. Her moody future soul sound off set Jade’s high energy tracks nicely. Sarah Whites style came through in her effortless delivery as she took us through the scope of what future soul hip hop in New York is evolving into. Last up was Ref Life who took over the space quite literally with his high energy. Rep commanded the mic like a veteran, he changed the beat when he wasn’t feeling it, and when he was feeling it- man that was a treat. He really got everyone hyped for the love of hip hop and all things true.
On the decks was DJ Destroyer who obviously got his name for a reason, alongside Bagpak’s crew Zalvinas and Destroyer tag team styling. Shantell Martin of Light Rhythm Visuals created an enchanting multimedia interactive backdrop in Sutra’s back room with her live digital projected portraits drawing audience members “hidden ora”. “Strictly Social” was Shantell’s first time doing her art at an event in the states, be sure to catch her doing visuals at Kissey Asplund’s birthday party show on the roof of Studio B Jul 23rd, it’s going to be on that new media music tip ( which is the future of the music industry).
Fiona Bloom, who coordinated the evening is by far one of the most passionate hilarious hardworking woman in the music industry, and her love for music was reflected in the people who attended the event. “Strictly Social” had it all, and hopefully we will see this L.A based event become a regular bi-coastal happening. As the artists get pushed out of N.Y.C and the rents continue to rise we need all the soul we can get, and “Strictly Social” certainly fed my soul for the night. I left full, and am hoping for a second serving.
