Mighty Underdogs, The

Dropping Science Fiction

Released by Definitive Jux

When was the last time hip-hop left you breathless? In a time where predictable raps and redundant beats clutter retail outlets, The Mighty Underdogs present a thrilling alternative. Comprised of Blackalicious, MC Gift of Gab and Lateef The Truth Speaker over the production of Headnodic, the ‘Dogs boast breakneck flows and extensive subject matter. Opening with the demented ‘Monster,’ the group threatens to ’slit ya open, hang you up by your feet, then take a picture,’ over frenetic brass and a paranormal G-Funk whistle. They then bound to
hugely contrasting efforts like the vulnerable, and self-explanatory, ‘So
Sad.’ Despite these tracks’ conceptual differences, the album maintains
a cohesive tone through its constantly experimental production. Thankfully,
the unique Underdogs prove that music ‘ hip-hop, specifically’can retain
its significance.
