Kardinal Offishall: The Importance of Being Kardi

Canada's most famous export (besides snow and, well, Snow) explains why he isn't for sale

Expect the flames to return to Not 4 Sale: “I told all the execs, if they weren’t passionate about my shit, please ask to be transferred,” Offishall jokes. Not 4 Sale should also be a return to Kardi’s uncompromising roaring West Indie roots. “Sonically, the album is outstanding. We’re trying to make history verse-by-verse.”  Not 4 Sale’s first single is the Akon-assisted “Dangerous,” where buzzing organ-loops provide the sultry wooing ground for Kardi’s noble-lion rhymes assited by Akon’s amorously seasoned hook. “Everyone can relate to the ‘not for sale’ philosophy,” he says. “There’s a limit to what I’ll do and I’m not gonna lose sleep for a check. This is music I want to do.”

How does Offishall feel in regards to being dubbed Canada’s “hip-hop ambassador” and the fact that he’s the only Canadian rapper to ever have dropped 16 bars on Rap City?  “I’ve had to fight tooth-and-nail to get onto the same level as [American rappers],” boasts Offishall. “Sure, I rep where I’m from, I love where I’m from. It’s who I am, but I can’t speak for a whole nation.”

With Not 4 Sale soon to drop, perhaps this time Offishall shall keep his embers burning bright. “I’m gonna tour the world and smash the hell out of this project,” he says. “I’m keeping it Kardi.”
