Joseph Costa, the former L’Altra member, releases his first solo album Lighter Subjects under the name Costa Music, collaborating with friends and fellow avant-garde artists (honorable mention: Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv). In this short and sweet debut, Costa Music showcases an impressive collaboration that yields great beat complexity throughout. The best track on the album (as the cover art hints) is ‘Feathers,’ beautifully multi-layered with airy lullaby-like accompaniment soaring over deep lyrics. Their label aptly dubs Lighter Subjects as ‘hypnotic soundscapes, weaving melodies, and tangled beats,’ and this debut is also packed with instrumental surprises including cello and jazz horn. One misleading aspect of Lighter Subjects is its title, rather than uplifting, many songs have a heavy sad vibe, but beautifully produced nonetheless.
