Fabian Williams’ Controversial ‘Race Card’

TheRaceCard Fabian Williams Controversial Race Card

Atlanta artist Fabian Williams (who illustrated URB’s 2006 Tupac spread) is gaining some notoriety for his creation of a blunt and literal “Race Card.” The cards feature political figures like Reverend Al Sharpton, Bill O’Reilly, Jesse Jackson, and Rush Limbaugh.

The cards are meant to snap some racial consciousness into those who “drop the race card” into a discussion or debate without much reason (or perhaps into those who discuss politics with complete racial ignorance). Once “You Have Received the Race Card,” it aims to make you rethink what you said about race in terms of its relevance. Check out his site and explanation of his idea here.

Watch this YouTube video and you’ll see that the cards are definitely funny but also purposeful and serious. The anti-defamation league seems to totally miss the point, ironically (dare we say ignorantly) defaming his artistic endeavor as trivial when its mission is to create dialogue, enlighten, and promote awareness.

Decide for yourself, but we’re saying that humor and message aren’t mutually exclusive.
