Ellen Allien
Sool
Journey into the deepest parts of Berlin, techno-style, as Ellen Allien pulls you aboard the U-Bahn with lead track ‘Einsteigen.’ From there, things only get more intriguing. Allien’s known for being a bit different: she’s a champion of the minimal sound though always manages to make it her own’this album epitomizes that ethos. Ellen shares her winter in Berlin with us, from that beautiful opening soundscape straight through to the final cut using sound to paint a bleak yet hauntingly pretty piece (most effectively heard in the woodwinds featured in ‘Zauber’ and the lovely vocal on ‘Frieda’). As you’d expect there are also more dancefloor oriented numbers, like ‘Sprung,’ full of tweaked out spring and bell noises, or the more up-tempo ‘Its’ that’ll have you thinking aliens are peppering you with lasers. SOOL works well as an album and represents some of the best material we’ve heard from Allien in a while.
