FabricLive 39

Released by Fabric Records

Hailing from North London, DJ Yoda compiles and mixes up the brand spankin’ new installation FabricLive.39. Getting his fingers into hip-hop with home-made demo mixtapes, Yoda continues to cut ‘n’ paste (but all grown-up now) combining his love of ’90s hip-hop with quirky pop music (dare we say one hit wonders?). DJ Yoda says of FabricLive.39, ‘This is the first mix that’s actually representative of what I do in a club,’ and also muses, ‘my understanding of hip-hop means you play everything. The style you play it in makes it hip-hop for me. It’s why I’ll play anything from TV themes to kids’ music to religious music.’ Yoda definitely surprises with his ‘randomosity’don’t be shocked when you come across Minnie Riperton’s ‘Loving You’ immediately followed by Collie Buddz’s ‘Come Around.’ FabricLive.39 is a playful throwback romp from a brass band version of ‘Sexual Healing’ to funky disco-esque electronic beats to Run D.M.C. to classics like Jurassic 5 and The Chemical Brothers. With its range and genre-defying sampling, FabricLive.39 seems fit for anything from a grubby block party to a night out at the hippest new club.
